In-floor Heating / Radiant Floor Heating Frequently Asked Questions
On a quest for energy savings?
With energy costs on the rise coupled with a global shift towards energy efficient living, a demand has emerged for alternative heating methods within the home. By far the biggest rising trend in home heating over the last two decades has been hydronic radiant floor heating.
What is hydronic radiant floor heating?
Hydronic radiant floor heating (or in-floor heating) is a system of plastic or metal pipes laid within a floor that carry hot water into specific rooms or ‘zones’. As the fluid travels through the pipes, the hot water is transferred to the floor surface. This provides an even distribution and effective means of warmth throughout the room. In-floor heating also gives you more options for arranging furniture in rooms, whereas traditional radiators cannot be near heat sensitive objects like refrigerators, musical instruments, kitchen cabinets and freezers, in-floor heating’s even heat allows these objects to be placed anywhere in the room!
To optimize the benefits of in-floor heating, we customize the piping layout carefully. Factors such as insulation on walls and quantity/quality of windows affect the level of heat loss in an area. The heat loss demand of an area is taken into account during design and has an effect on pipe spacing, water temperature, flow rate and floor covering. Flooring materials have different heat transfer properties – the most popular today are ceramic tiles or panels. Hardwood floors, carpets, and rugs are more resistant than ceramic, but can work effectively too.
In-floor heating should be controlled by thermostats to get the most out of energy saving. We can take advantage of these sensors to control the temperature of the floor in different areas of your home, such as the basement, first floor, second floor, solarium, etc. Our zone systems are designed by adding extra devices like pumps, mixing valves, thermostatic valves, manifolds, and other controls.
The benefits of in-floor heating
With radiant floor heating installed, homeowners can drop the temperature in a room by 3°C. Heated floors at 19°C give you the exact same comforting feeling as a room heated by radiators that is set to 22°C. Lowering the temperature of your water by only 1°C can save you as much as 6% of your heating costs. Where 3°C savings can cut your bill by up to 18% each month!
Space to breathe; Space to live
Hydronic radiant floor heating provides an efficient solution for heating and space management. With the heating under the floor, we find that most customers prefer to remove their radiators, freeing up more of their living space for just that, living.
Where to use hydronic radiant floor heating
Areas of the house that are underground, near large windows and built on ceramic tile that are conductive to cold. Zones in the house that are popular choices for in-floor heating are:
- Bathrooms: Just imagine the pleasant sensation of stepping out of the shower and onto a warm floor! The small size of bathrooms also means the cost of in-floor heat is reduced,
- Hallways: In-floor heating is ideal for hallways where bulky radiators would take up too much space,
- Kitchens: Ceramic tiles work beautifully with in-floor heating, plus the layout of your kitchen cabinets won’t need to be interrupted by radiators, Basements, and Solariums
